Rank is determined algorithmically based on how well you perform against other players on average on games that you have won. Because it is based on an average, one or two bad games likely won't destroy your rankings. Since it is based on comparative performance, game options are irrelevent because everyone is playing with the same rules. Solo games do not factor into your rank at all, good or bad.
